Qualtech Systems Completes Successful NASA Phase II Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) Project Resulting in Advanced "Remote Diagnostics Server" Solution

Wethersfield, CT. June 2001...Qualtech Systems, Inc. (QSI) announces the successful completion of a NASA Ames Phase II SBIR resulting in the development of an innovative large scale "Remote Diagnostics Server (RDS)" architecture. The system was designed for remote monitoring/diagnostics or "Telemaintenance" on NASA’s International Space Station. This exciting new product provides an enabling technology for emerging e-commerce "after market" service providers and new "Telemaintenance" applications. With this technology, an e-commerce customer can upload sensor/test data to RDS over the Internet, have it automatically processed through the intelligent model based reasoner and see the resulting diagnostics on a web page in a matter of seconds. Furthermore, the customer can launch intelligent, dynamic test/maintenance procedures to resolve any remaining fault isolation ambiguity, perform the maintenance, and verify the operational integrity of the system. All the diagnostic results, test outcomes, and procedure steps taken during the maintenance are logged in RDS for later analysis or display during future maintenance activities. This dynamic procedure can be optimized for cost or time and it will account for any resource constraints either listed in a stored site profile or input by the technician. All of these capabilities are automatic and intelligent (based on an expert model of the system) thus eliminating the need for a group of experts in the "back room" like some current remote diagnostic/monitoring systems require. The RDS solution puts the software on the server computer so that all the customer (the "client") needs is a web browser, Internet access, and an account....a server to "thin client" software solution.

The RDS architecture (patent pending) incorporates the QSI TEAMS™ (Testability Engineering and Maintenance System) software tool suite (TEAMS-RT™, TEAMATE™, TEAMS-KB™) for real-time monitoring/diagnosis, interactive diagnosis (driving interactive electronic technical manuals), and diagnostic/maintenance data management, logging and trending. This advanced diagnostics approach uses cause-effect failure models of the system to perform comprehensive diagnostics right "out of the box" eliminating the need for expensive, data intensive, incomplete machine learning approaches required by some current case-based and neural network diagnostics systems. The RDS package will be formally released at AUTOTESTCON in August 2001. The Beta test version is available NOW allowing potential customers a chance to test the system and work with QSI for initial deployment.

TEAMS™ (Testability Engineering and Maintenance System) integrates the modeling methodology and fault-isolation algorithms in an easy-to-use graphical user interface.

TEAMS™ Graphical Failure Model used for Testability Analysis, Real-Time Diagnostics, and Interactive Diagnostics

TEAMATE™, a dynamic fault diagnostics tool used for adaptive field diagnosis, assists in troubleshooting by identifying the failure source(s) in the shortest possible time, subject to various constraints on available resources, setup operations already performed, the initial suspect set, and user complaints. The diagnostic engine can assist maintenance personnel or system operators in off-line checkouts and repairs. The system model stored in TEAMS™ can also be used by TEAMS-RT™ (a real-time diagnostics tool) to perform passive on-line fault-diagnosis using asynchronously arriving anomaly-reports, alarms, or applied test-results. The statistical information related to system failure-modes, failure rates of individual components, and test resources can be stored in TEAMS-KB™ - a knowledge base to provide ready information during testability analysis, reliability analysis, and logistic data management.
