Qualtech Systems’ Innovative Real-Time Diagnostic Reasoner Takes Flight at NASA Ames

Wethersfield, CT. April 2001...Qualtech Systems, Inc. (QSI) announces the first flight of the TEAMS-RT™ (Testability Engineering and Maintenance System – Run Time) model based diagnostic reasoner. The innovative TEAMS-RT™ software is embedded in a Health and Usage Monitoring System (HUMS) computer called QHuMS (QHuMS – QSI HUMS) installed on the NASA Ames flight research UH-60 helicopter known as RASCAL. The QHuMS was designed and built by QSI and SIGPRO (California Signal Processing Associates) under a NASA Ames Phase II Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) contract.

The TEAMS-RT™ software is running a diagnostic model of the H-60 power train including the engines and transmission. The model was created in the TEAMS™ testability analysis tool and then exported to the TEAMS-RT™ module for embedding in the QHuMS computer. The QSI technology offers a very unique and innovative approach to developing and implementing Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) systems. With this approach (being demonstrated on RASCAL), the work completed during testability design (modeling and analysis) can be DIRECTLY embedded into the IVHM system on the vehicle. This approach tightly couples the testability analysis with the run-time diagnostic performance.... something testability engineers have been desiring for years.

TEAMS-RT™ was designed for passive, ultra-fast inferencing and very low memory requirements to accommodate large, complex systems (and system of systems). To date, the memory and throughput performance of TEAMS-RT™ has been tested and has exceeded expectations. The flight test program will help validate TEAMS-RT™ performance under actual flight conditions.

Qualtech Systems, Inc. is a leading provider of comprehensive, advanced Diagnostics/Testability, Reliability and Maintenance software as well as engineering project and research services. QSI’s integrated tool set for design for testability, interactive diagnostics and on-line monitoring, consists of five software tools: TEAMS™, TEAMS-RT™, TEAMATE™, TEAMS-KB&trade:, and TEAMS-RDS™. These tools are founded on the multi-signal flow graph modeling methodology and the concomitant fault-isolation algorithms. TEAMS™ (a Testability Engineering and Maintenance System) integrates the modeling methodology and fault-isolation algorithms in an easy-to-use graphical user interface. TEAMS™ is mainly a design-for-testability tool, but its diagnostic procedures can be embedded into interactive electronic technical manuals and automatic test equipment, and used with two companion tools: TEAMATE™ and TEAMS-RT™. TEAMATE™, a dynamic fault diagnostics tool used for adaptive field diagnosis, assists in troubleshooting by identifying the failure source(s) in the shortest possible time, subject to various constraints on available resources, setup operations already performed, the initial suspect set, and user complaints. The diagnostic engine can assist maintenance personnel or system operators in off-line checkouts and repairs. The system model stored in TEAMS™ can also be used by TEAMS-RT™ (a real-time diagnostics tool) to perform passive on-line fault-diagnosis using asynchronously arriving anomaly-reports, alarms, or applied test-results. The statistical information related to system failure-modes, failure rates of individual components, and test resources can be stored in TEAMS-KB&trade: - a knowledge base to provide ready information during testability analysis, reliability analysis, and logistic data management. The new TEAMS-RDS™ product incorporates TEAMS-RT™, TEAMATE™, and TEAMS-KB&trade: on a server computer that can "serve" intelligent, optimized diagnostics to thin clients over the Internet or any computer network. All diagnostic reasoning and technical data can be maintained and upgraded on a central server and instantly made available to clients on the system (via computer network or Internet).

QSI provides its software and research services to a wide range of customers including Boeing, Lockheed, BAe Systems, Honeywell, Sikorsky, and has contracts with NASA, Army and the Naval Surface Warfare Center.
