Qualtech Systems, Inc. Selected by U.S. Army for Research on Data Mining Applications to Rotorcraft Diagnostics and Prognostics

Wethersfield, CT. January 2001...Qualtech Systems, Inc. (QSI) and the University of Iowa as a research partner have been awarded a contract by the U.S. Army Aviation Applied Technology Directorate (AATD) for a phase I research project entitled "Data Mining Within an Advanced Diagnostic and Prognostic System for Rotorcraft Maintenance". In the first phase of the research project, QSI intends to build upon its integrated diagnostics tool set and enhance its data management capabilities to include sophisticated data mining functions for enhanced maintenance and logistics support. Leveraging ongoing work on Health and Usage Monitoring Systems (HUMS) for Army and Navy helicopters, the work will demonstrate the application of data mining with prognostic capabilities for aircraft system maintenance. A primary benefit of this effort will be the availability of data mining capabilities within a complete integrated diagnostics and prognostic frame work, that offers visualization of analysis results, ease of implementation, and use of data mining results on the flight line. As a by-product, the effort will also provide an integrated process of system modeling, on-board data collection, pilot debriefing, adaptive, automated, and interactive diagnosis with data collection, and data mining.

This research, involving data mining based solutions for exploiting maintenance and logistics data, presents a unique opportunity to build an implementation framework utilizing the diagnostic and data management capabilities of QSI’s software tools. In particular, this research will lead to the development of significant data management and harvesting capabilities in TEAMS-KB (Testability Engineering and Maintenance System – Knowledge Base) including presentation of this data at remote locations via the Internet to minimize the maintenance and logistics burden in fleet operations. QSI’s comprehensive Integrated Diagnostics tool set (the TEAMS tool set) will benefit greatly from enhanced data mining capability. The tool set is currently being readied for integration with an open-architecture based health and usage monitoring system (HUMS) for the diagnostics and maintenance of Army and Navy helicopter systems. Our ultimate solution will make the results of data mining directly available to the user and tightly coupled with the diagnostics and prognostics functions of our tool set.
